Big fan of boards – moreso than the final spots - and these are fantastic, Chris! Your handle on hands and faces are just awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Believe it or not, some studios (around my neck of the woods) still hire traditional artists for boards, as they prefer the look of hand drawn as opposed to digital. It's maybe not as quick or editable, but man they sure are pretty.
Thanks Matt, my influences are a weird hybrid of Jack Davis caricatures and fashion illustration, which actually worked out great since half the ads I worked on were comedy bits and the others were "serious". The best part of boarding was I learned to draw fast and was eventually able to make up a lot of different scenes and characters out of my imagination. Really useful doing all the theme park stuff I've done for the last 25 years. I sadly photobash more than draw these days, which can be fun, but some of our groups still like a decent sketch.
Forgot to respond to this earlier... Big big fan of Jack Davis. Have you seen this? Stan Lee interviews Davis and Kurtzmann: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsQa_IHChJY I wish I could draw faster and with the proper human dimensions / accuracy, but that just comes with practice. I'm not hired to do character work, so have to practice that in my off time (which there's an increasing shortage of as I get older). Funny you mention the themed work helping. I always hear that most people can nail the architecture or the character design, but not both. You're one of the exceptions obviously! And ugh, PS. Not a big fan. Sure, it may be a more technical / accurate representation, but totally devoid of that human touch. I'm old school though. Anyway, again, keep up the great work. Always enjoy seeing the artwork.
Thanks for the link. As for Photoshop, it's love/hate. I need it for speed at work and it makes changes easier, but that just means they get used to making more changes.Over and over and...I sometimes get a half-decent piece that makes it to the light of day, look up "Disney changes to Jungle Cruise" in image search and my piece of the sunken cruise boat full of chimps will pop up. That's about as far as I go with PS.
I've been in the commercial art world since 1982 specializing in storyboards and concept art for the entertainment and advertising industries.I currently work full time doing design for theme parks, and unfortunately I'm not allowed to show any of my day-to-day artwork. I enjoy swapping notes with others in the art field, please feel free to share your website or blog links.
